Description
Epidendrum dendromacroophorum (also called 'Tree-like Epidendrum', among many other common names) is a medium-sized, epiphytic orchid species that has a sympodial growth habit. It is native to Central and South America, and is found in humid, tropical forests. Its leaves are oblong-lanceolate, and its inflorescence is a long, pendulous raceme with many small, white flowers.
Uses & Benefits
Epidendrum dendromacroophorum has been used in traditional medicine to treat fever, headaches, and stomach ailments. It is also used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a houseplant.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Epidendrum dendromacroophorum has white flowers with yellow centers. The flowers have a sweet scent. The seeds are small and black. The seedlings have a single stem with small, pointed leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Epidendrum dendromacroophorum can be cultivated and propagated by division of the rhizome or by seed. When propagating by division, the rhizome should be divided into sections with at least two growth points and planted in a well-draining medium. When propagating by seed, the seeds should be sown on the surface of a well-draining medium and kept moist until germination. Once the seedlings are established, they should be repotted into individual containers.
