Description
Masdevallia carmenensis (also called Carmen's Masdevallia, among many other common names) is a small epiphytic orchid with an upright habit. It is native to Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, and grows in humid montane forests at elevations of 1000 to 3000 meters. The plant has long, slender leaves and produces small, fragrant flowers in shades of yellow, orange and red.
Uses & Benefits
Masdevallia carmenensis is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a houseplant. It is also used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The Masdevallia carmenensis flower is a small, tubular flower with a yellow and white coloration. The seed is a small, black, round seed. The seedlings are small and have a yellow and white coloration.
Cultivation and Propagation
Masdevallia carmenensis can be propagated through division or by seed. When propagating by division, the plant should be divided into several sections, each with at least two growth points. The divisions should then be planted in a well-draining medium and kept moist. When propagating by seed, the seeds should be sown on a moist medium and kept in a warm, humid environment until germination occurs. Once the seedlings have emerged, they should be transplanted into individual pots and kept in a warm, humid environment.
